The 9 Planets and Their Effects — Foundations of Jyotish

"Grahādīnaṁ Jagat Sarvam" — The entire world is governed by the Grahas.

A Jātaka (horoscope) is a language composed of 12 houses and 9 planets. The houses tell us "which domain of life"; the planets tell us "what will happen." Let us first learn these nine letters of the cosmic alphabet.

What Are the Navagraha?

Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) employs nine planets — Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangal (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu, and Ketu. Together, they are called the Navagraha.

An important clarification is needed here. Astronomically, the Sun is a star and the Moon is a satellite — neither is a "planet." However, in Jyotish, the word "Graha" means "that which seizes or influences" (grah = to grasp). It is not an astronomical classification — the impact observed from Earth is what matters here.

Rahu and Ketu are even more special. They are not physical celestial bodies — they are the two mathematical points where the Moon's orbital path intersects the Sun's ecliptic. Hence they are called Chhāyā Graha (shadow planets). Though formless, these are the very points that cause eclipses, which is why they hold a profoundly significant place in Jyotish.

The outer planets — Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — are not used in traditional Vedic Astrology. They are invisible to the naked eye, and within the Parāshara tradition, no Karakatva (signification) or rulership has been assigned to them.

Benefic and Malefic Planets

Grahas are broadly classified into two categories:

The most common mistake in Jyotish is misunderstanding this classification. "Pāpa Graha" does not mean "evil planet" — it means a planet that teaches through the hard way. Without Shani there is no discipline; without Mangal there is no courage.

Two further nuances:

• Budha is a chameleon. He takes on the nature of whichever planet he associates with. Paired with a benefic, he becomes benefic; paired with a malefic, he turns malefic.
• Chandra depends on the lunar phase. A waxing Moon approaching Pūrṇimā (full moon) is a strong benefic; a waning (Kshīṇa) Moon approaching Amāvāsyā (new moon) is weakened.

Most importantly — this is only the natural classification. Whether a planet will actually do good in your horoscope is ultimately determined by your Lagna (Ascendant). For Tulā (Libra) Lagna, Shani is the Yogakāraka; the same Shani, for Mesha (Aries) Lagna, becomes the 11th lord and the Bādhakādhipati.

The Nine Planets — Detailed Effects

1. Surya (Ravi) — Ātmakāraka (Soul Significator)

Surya is the soul of the horoscope. He reveals who you are, your self-respect, and how you relate to authority.

When strong: Self-confidence, leadership qualities, government employment or positions of responsibility, father's support, integrity. When afflicted: Distance from father, issues of self-esteem or ego, weakness related to bones/eyes/heart, conflict with superiors.

A subtle point: a planet that comes very close to Surya becomes "Asthangata" (combust) — its capacity to deliver results diminishes significantly. However, Surya himself is not affected by this.

2. Chandra — Manokāraka (Mind Significator)

Karakatva: Mind, mother, emotions, the public, water, left eye, chest Own Rashi: Kataka (Cancer) · Exaltation: Rishabha (Taurus) 3° · Debilitation: Vrischika (Scorpio) 3° · Dasha: 10 years

In Vedic Astrology, Chandra holds greater importance than Surya — because the entire Dasha calculation is based on the Moon's Nakshatra. Moreover, when we ask "what is my Rashi?", we are referring to the Rashi where Chandra is placed.

When strong: Mental peace, mother's love, public support, imaginative ability, sound sleep. When afflicted: Mental disturbance, anxiety, insomnia, worries related to mother's health, indecisiveness.

3. Mangal (Kuja, Angaraka) — Courage Significator

Karakatva: Courage, siblings, land, blood, energy, competition, surgery Own Rashi: Mesha (Aries), Vrischika (Scorpio) · Exaltation: Makara (Capricorn) 28° · Debilitation: Kataka (Cancer) 28° · Dasha: 7 years

Mangal is the commander-in-chief of the horoscope — effort, perseverance, and the ability to defend oneself.

When strong: Valour, talent in sports/military/police/engineering, fortune in land and property, quick decision-making. When afflicted: Anger, haste, accident-proneness, blood-related issues, sibling conflicts.

When Mangal is placed in houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12, it is considered Mangal Dosha (Māngalya Dosha) — but there are many cancellation rules (Dosha Bhanga) for this. There is no need to panic simply because the Dosha is present.

4. Budha — Intelligence Significator

Karakatva: Intelligence, speech, education, commerce, mathematics, nervous system, skin Own Rashi: Mithuna (Gemini), Kanyā (Virgo) · Exaltation: Kanyā (Virgo) 15° · Debilitation: Mīna (Pisces) 15° · Dasha: 17 years

Budha represents the ability to process information — learning, speaking, writing, calculating, negotiating. In Kanyā Rashi, Budha attains both own house and exaltation in the same sign — a unique distinction that belongs to Budha alone among all Navagraha.

When strong: Sharp intellect, excellent communication, business acumen, talent in writing/accounting/software. When afflicted: Poor memory, confused speech, obstacles in education, nervous debility, inability to make decisions.

5. Guru (Brihaspati) — Wisdom Significator

Karakatva: Wisdom, children, wealth, Dharma, teacher, husband (for women), liver Own Rashi: Dhanus (Sagittarius), Mīna (Pisces) · Exaltation: Kataka (Cancer) 5° · Debilitation: Makara (Capricorn) 5° · Dasha: 16 years

Guru is the greatest benefic among the Navagraha. His unique power lies in his three special aspects — the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses — whichever house Guru aspects, that house's significations are protected. This is why the tradition says "Guru Pārvai Kodi Nanmai" (Guru's glance bestows a crore of blessings).

When strong: Wisdom, good teachers/mentors, blessings of children, wealth, spiritual inclination, respect. When afflicted: Losses through over-confidence, obstacles in education, worries related to children, weight/liver issues.

6. Shukra — Kālathra Kāraka (Spouse Significator)

Karakatva: Love, marriage, wife, art, luxury, vehicles, beauty, kidneys Own Rashi: Rishabha (Taurus), Tulā (Libra) · Exaltation: Mīna (Pisces) 27° · Debilitation: Kanyā (Virgo) 27° · Dasha: 20 years

Shukra commands the longest Dasha — 20 years. He governs life's pleasures, aesthetics, and relationships.

When strong: Happy married life, artistic taste, comfort of vehicles and property, charm, luxury. When afflicted: Cracks in married life, excessive sensual tendencies, kidney/reproductive issues, debt from lavish spending.

7. Shani (Shanīshwara, Manda) — Longevity Significator

Karakatva: Longevity, Karma, discipline, labour, sorrow, delays, elders, bones and joints Own Rashi: Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius) · Exaltation: Tulā (Libra) 20° · Debilitation: Mesha (Aries) 20° · Dasha: 19 years

Shani is the most misunderstood Graha. He is not a punisher — he is a judge. He delivers the fruits of your Karma — slowly perhaps, but inevitably. The success Shani grants comes slow, but stands permanent.

When strong: Perseverance, discipline, long life, success in land/mining/iron/labour-related fields, rise in old age. When afflicted: Chronic delays, loneliness, depression, joint/knee pain, not receiving results proportionate to effort.

Sade Sati (7½ years of Shani), Ashtama Shani, Kandaka Shani — these are Shani's transit positions. They are not periods of punishment; they are periods of purification.

8. Rahu — Chhāyā Graha (North Node)

Karakatva: Desire, sudden rise, foreign lands, technology, illusion, breaking conventions, poison Own Rashi: Traditionally none (special affinity with Kumbha/Aquarius) · Dasha: 18 years

Rahu is the amplifier. In whichever house he sits, he creates an insatiable thirst for that house's significations — driving you to want more and more without granting satisfaction.

When strong: Foreign opportunities, technological talent, sudden fame, success in unconventional fields, political/media attraction. When afflicted: Confusion, deception, substance addiction, legal troubles, attachment to appearances over reality.

9. Ketu — Chhāyā Graha (South Node)

Karakatva: Moksha, renunciation, past-life Karma, spirituality, medicine, sudden loss Own Rashi: Traditionally none (special affinity with Vrischika/Scorpio) · Dasha: 7 years

Ketu is the exact opposite of Rahu — Rahu accumulates, Ketu liberates. In whichever house Ketu sits, there is a sense of already having completed that area of life; interest wanes, yet there exists a natural mastery in that domain.

When strong: Deep spiritual inclination, research ability, knowledge of medicine/astrology/mantra, sense of liberation. When afflicted: Causeless fears, feeling of disconnection, sudden losses, undiagnosable health issues.

Note: There is scholarly disagreement among Jyotish traditions regarding the exaltation-debilitation signs of Rahu and Ketu. Some texts assign Rishabha (Taurus) or Mithuna (Gemini) as Rahu's exaltation, and Vrischika (Scorpio) or Dhanus (Sagittarius) for Ketu. Therefore, the safer and more traditional approach is to evaluate Rahu-Ketu not by their exaltation-debilitation alone, but by examining the condition of the lord of the Rashi they occupy.

Add up the Dasha years — 6 + 10 + 7 + 17 + 16 + 20 + 19 + 18 + 7 = 120. This is the complete cycle of the Vimshottari Dasha — the 120 years that tradition reckons as a full human lifespan. All nine planets share one complete life among themselves.

The order of Dasha is also fixed: Ketu → Shukra → Surya → Chandra → Mangal → Rahu → Guru → Shani → Budha → back to Ketu.

Planetary Friendships and Enmities

When two planets come together, the result depends on whether they are friends or enemies:

This is why a Surya-Shani conjunction produces friction (father-son conflict, clashes with authority), while a Shukra-Shani conjunction yields stable, disciplined prosperity.

Planetary Aspects — Who Sees Whom?

A planet does not influence only the house it occupies. From its position, it also "aspects" (Drishti) other houses and impacts them. Half the reading of a horoscope lies in understanding these aspects.

The basic rule: All planets fully aspect the 7th house from themselves. Beyond this, only three planets have special aspects:

There is a deep philosophy embedded in this list. Guru's special aspects (5, 9) are Trikona houses — related to grace, fortune, and past-life merit. Shani's special aspects (3, 10) are Upachaya houses — related to effort and labour. In other words, Guru blesses; Shani puts you to work. The very nature of both planets is written in the houses they aspect.

Regarding Rahu-Ketu's aspects, traditions differ — most Jyotishis accept 5, 7, 9 aspects for them as well.

A practical note: Many overlook Shani's 3rd and 10th aspects. Even when there is no planet in someone's 10th house (career), a Shani sitting in the 1st house will directly impact it through his 10th aspect — causing delays in career, but also steady, lasting growth.

What Determines a Planet's Results?

This is the core message of this article. "Shani is bad, Guru is good" is only the first lesson. The actual results are determined by five factors:

1. Which houses the planet rules based on the Lagna — this is the most important. Ruling Kendra-Trikona houses makes it a Yogakāraka; ruling the 6th, 8th, or 12th presents challenges.
2. Which house and which Rashi it is placed in — own house, exalted, friendly Rashi, or debilitated.
3. Its strength — Is it combust? Retrograde? Does it have Paksha Bala? What are its Ashtakavarga points?
4. Who aspects it, and who conjoins it — benefic or malefic influence?
5. When does its Dasha arrive — even the best-placed planet cannot deliver results without its Dasha period.

Without considering all five together, judging a horoscope by "Shani is in my chart" alone is like reading a single word from a sentence and trying to derive its meaning.

Same Shani, Three Lagnas — Three Outcomes

Let us see this through an example. Notice how the very same Shani gives entirely different results for three different Lagna natives:

For a Tulā Lagna native, Shani Dasha could be the peak period of their life. The same Shani Dasha could be a period of severe tests for a Kataka Lagna native. In both charts, Shani may be in the same sign, the same degree in the sky — but because the Lagna differs, the results are diametrically opposite.

This is the astrological rebuttal to the common belief that "Shani is bad." A Graha has a nature; but it does not have a verdict. The verdict is delivered by the Lagna.

1. Which planet determines "my Rashi"? Chandra. The Rashi where Chandra was placed at the time of your birth is your Janma Rashi. Western astrology uses the Sun sign — which is why the Rashi differs between the two systems.

2. Does an exalted planet always give good results? No. Exaltation indicates strength, not beneficence. If a planet that rules the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses (Dusthāna) is exalted, it may powerfully deliver the significations of those challenging houses.

3. Should I be afraid of a debilitated planet? Not necessarily. If Neecha Bhanga (cancellation of debilitation) occurs, the debilitation itself can transform into a Rājayoga. One should first check conditions such as whether the lord of the debilitation sign is placed in a Kendra.

4. Do Rahu and Ketu have Dasha periods? Yes. Rahu has 18 years and Ketu has 7 years — both are part of the total 120-year Vimshottari Dasha cycle.

5. What does it mean when a planet is "Vakri" (retrograde)? When a planet appears to move backward as seen from Earth. A retrograde planet delivers results in an unusual, inward-looking manner. Surya and Chandra never go retrograde.

6. Do Navagraha remedies really work? A remedy, in its truest sense, is about consciously cultivating the Karakatva of a weak planet in daily life. If Surya is weak, follow a disciplined daily routine; if Shani is weak, embrace hard work and service. Mantras, charity, and gemstones are supplements — real transformation comes through behaviour.

7. Which planet is the most powerful? There is no single answer. The planet that is the Yogakāraka for your Lagna, and the planet whose Dasha is currently running — these two are the most powerful in your life right now.
